Wuhan Virus

Dr Richard Styles FRCGP

Chief Medical Officer, AMC Group

With a continuing number of cases of Wuhan virus – some 7,711 in China there is obviously continued concern about the spread of virus, although to date very few cases have been diagnosed in Europe and none in the countries where AMC Clinics operate – Ukraine, Georgia and Kazakhstan.

As Chief Medical Officer I am now briefed that all our clinics have been communicating with their respective Ministries of Health and receive real-time updates on the situation. Furthermore each clinic has an effective protocol for dealing with suspected cases of Wuhan virus and all of our Physicians have received training on how to deal with any suspected cases. There are no immediate on-site tests for Wuhan virus.

I would however like to reassure all patients that the chance of having a severe or life threatening infection is not high. As in any outbreak of viral influenza those most at risk are the elderly, those with diabetes or heart disease and those with lowered immunity. There are probably many other non-reported cases in China with mild illness and the actual death rate is probably less than 1%

The Center for Disease Control has issued the following information on preventing the virus:

How to protect yourself:

There are currently no vaccines available to protect you against human coronavirus infection. You may be able to reduce your risk of infection by doing the following

  • wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands
  • avoid close contact with people who are sick

How to protect others:

If you have cold-like symptoms, you can help protect others by doing the following

  • stay home while you are sick
  • avoid close contact with others
  • cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands
  • clean and disinfect objects and surfaces

Yours sincerely,

Where is AMC testing patients for COVID-19?

We’re currently offering PCR testing to anyone interested either in the clinic or in the comfort of your home/hotel.

If you require numerous employees to be tested on the same day for an upcoming business trip, we can organise an onsite workplace testing session.

How long does it take to get back results?

Results for PCR Testing takes up to 24 hours to process. We also offer rapid testing for those requiring same-day results.

Upon request, we may provide a Covid-19 travel certificate for travel purposes, verified by a doctor to provide proof of a negative test result, at no additional cost. When required, a certified Covid-19 travel certificate can be presented to show you’re safe to fly and enter a country.
